This course meets the requirements of CA AB 2319 and equips perinatal care providers with the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to deliver compassionate, inclusive, and high-quality care to all birthing patients. You will explore the concept of intersectionality—how interconnected aspects of identity shape healthcare experiences—and examine the unique needs of transgender and non-binary individuals during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care. Practical tools and strategies are provided to help you recognize and thoughtfully interrupt automatic assumptions that could unintentionally affect the quality of care. Additionally, you will learn actionable techniques to create affirming, safe, and respectful healthcare environments for patients of diverse identities. This course meets the requirements of California AB 2319, the amended Dignity in Pregnancy and Childbirth Act.

After completing the course, learners will be able to:

  • Teach co-workers important concepts and correct myths and misunderstandings.
  • Describe the research evidence on racial inequalities in perinatal care and outcomes.
  • Explain why well-intentioned providers who are consciously and genuinely committed to fairness and high-quality care can still behave in racially biased ways.
  • Apply evidence-based strategies for interrupting racial biases and protecting patients from racism.

  • Understand the connection between the historical enslavement of people from West Africa and current-day stereotypes.
  • Apply concrete and evidence-based actions to interrupt racial bias, help buffer patients from racial bias, and provide equitable care for all patients.
