What Washington Requires

In 2021, Washington passed Engrossed Substitute Senate Bill 5229, requiring healthcare professionals credentialed under Title 18 RCW who are subject to continuing education requirements to complete health equity continuing education.

The Washington State Department of Health established model standards in WAC 246-12-800 through 246-12-830. The model requirement is a minimum of two hours of health equity continuing education every four years. Individual licensing boards and commissions may establish additional or more frequent requirements.

Some licensing boards require more frequent education. The Washington State Board of Nursing requires two hours of health equity CE every renewal period. RNs and LPNs renew annually, so the requirement becomes two hours every year beginning with the 2026 renewal. These hours cannot be carried forward from one renewal period to the next.

The complete two-hour curriculum is available for nurses, physicians, and allied health professionals, with profession-specific continuing education credit where applicable.

Why This Curriculum

Free health equity courses exist, and Washington links to some of them. This curriculum was built for a different purpose: to improve what happens inside the patient encounter, not simply to satisfy a requirement.

The first hour provides the foundation, examining how rapid cognitive processes and automatic shortcuts can influence clinical judgment under time pressure, stress, and cognitive load. It introduces practical strategies clinicians can use to strengthen decision accuracy, communication consistency, and reliability of care.

The second hour builds on that foundation through two 30-minute deep dive courses selected for your area of practice and clinical context. These courses apply the same evidence-based principles to situations clinicians encounter in everyday care.

The curriculum has been evaluated with thousands of clinicians. In follow-up evaluations, more than 93 percent reported better patient encounters, increased confidence, or better patient care, and more than 90 percent reported using the strategies they learned in daily practice.
