What Your Colleagues Say:

"I had never heard the term birthing person and plan to use it now. I also liked hearing about transgender care. I really hadn't given that area much thought and it is very interesting."

"What I liked most about this course was competence/warmth ratio and how we unconsciously assess people with this. This was something new for me as a nurse and it is something that I will try and be aware of in my practice in the future."

"I really liked the examples given were simple and realistic. I liked that it included the transgender/nonbinary experience. I feel like their experience may be mentioned but never explored in detail."

As providers and clinicians, we strive to provide all our patients the highest quality of care.

Overview
Across the United States and within California, a large body of research has documented consistent patterns of unwanted variation in the quality and safety of care across perinatal care patients with different backgrounds and identities, including race, ethnicity, gender identity, and body size.

This course, Updated Dignity in Pregnancy and Childbirth, provides California clinicians and providers with the essential tools and information they need to provide consistent, reliable, and high-quality care for every perinatal care patient, including:
  • Cutting edge insights into the factors that can, without our awareness and despite our true intentions, influence the consistency and reliability of the care we provide.
  • Evidence-based and proven practical "in-the-moment" tools that prevent unwanted variation in care and foster the highest quality of care and safety for every perinatal care patient.

This updated learning experience is a comprehensive response to the requirements of California AB 2319.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

Describe the causes of unintended and unwanted variation in quality of care for perinatal care patients of different social identities and backgrounds.

Gain practical, evidence-based tools, to provide consistently high quality care for perinatal patients with different backgrounds and identities.

Describe how time pressure, cognitive load, fatigue, and stress can increase reliance on rapid “default assumptions,” and explain how this can contribute to unintended variation in perinatal communication and clinical decisions.

Recognize how first-noticed identity cues can shape rapid impressions, and identify how those impressions may influence empathy, attention, clinical decision-making and patient behavior in perinatal encounters.

Apply at least three in-the-moment “rapid mind-hacks” that interrupt the impact of cognitive and social biases on patient care.

Demonstrate communication behaviors that strengthen partnership and informed decision-making.

Implement core gender-inclusive care practices.
